In light of the recent “wait list scandal” at a Phoenix VA facility that has been tied to the deaths of at least 40 veterans, a senior official in the Department of Veterans Affairs has resigned from his position, reports the Washington Times.

The scandal, which came to light when a whistleblower revealed that the names of certain veterans seeking medical care at the Phoenix VA had been placed on a secret list in order to achieve the appearance of shorter wait times, resulted in a call for greater accountability within the department by lawmakers in Washington. Undersecretary for Health Dr. Robert Petzel announced his resignation in response.

Since the initial report on the scandal at the Phoenix facility, similar problems at other VA locations nationwide have come to light. Dr. Petzel had already planned to retire in 2014.
