The Los Angeles Times reports that Tyson Foods has recalled 33,840 pounds of mechanically separated chicken after the meat was found to contain traces of salmonella.
The chicken, which was sold for institutional use and not available to the general public, was connected to the illnesses of seven people at a Tennessee correctional facility. Testing conducted by the Tennessee Department of Health discovered salmonella in the product, which was subsequently recalled by manufacturer Tyson Foods. Salmonella can cause symptoms including fever, diarrhea and abdominal/digestive problems.
More than 800 cases of the chicken were shipped to institutional customers in California, Nevada, Florida, Indiana, Kansas, New Jersey, Ohio and Wisconsin. Chicken affected by the recall can be identified by the presence of code 17433-928 on the packaging’s label.
