British-based online clothing retailer ASOS issued a voluntary recall of one of its belts earlier this year due to the presence of radioactive materials in the accessory.

The recall, which took place in January but only recently came to light in the press, was issued for a style of black studded belt that was found to contain Cobalt-60, a radioactive isotope known to cause cancer. The discovery was made while the belt was passing through U.S. Customs.

While approximately 600 of the belts had been produced, only 49 had been purchased at the time of the recall. ASOS was able to contact the purchasers and inform them of the recall. According to a company representative, the contamination is likely due to poor metal manufacturing practices from a third party supplier not located in the U.K.
