A new study published in the journal JAMA Psychiatry found that traumatic brain injury may double a veteran’s risk of developing PTSD after exposure to combat, according to an article in the Los Angeles Times.

The study, which followed 1,648 Marines in Southern California who were deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan between 2008 and 2012, found that about 20% of those surveyed suffered at least one brain injury during their deployment, making them twice as likely to develop PTSD.

The link between brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder may be related to the fact that many brain injuries are caused by psychologically traumatic bomb blasts; however, there is also a possbility that head injuries cause structural changes to the brain, making PTSD more likely – and recovery more difficult.
