Listeria monocytogenes is a potentially dangerous organism, especially in young children, frail or elderly people, and those with weak immune systems. Symptoms include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. It can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women, and they are 20x more likely to contract listeriosis than other healthy adults. Listeria can be found in soil, water, and some animals, and can be found in food processing plants. Because it can thrive even in cold temperatures, unlike other germs, it can also be found in raw milk and foods made from raw milk. It is most commonly found in the following foods: Ready to eat deli meats and hot dogs, refrigerated pates or meat spreads, unpasteurized (raw) milk and dairy products, refrigerated smoked seafood, and raw sprouts. It typically can be killed by cooking and pasteurization. Some ways to avoid listeria infection are: Rinsing raw produce before eating, keeping uncooked meats, poultry, and seafood separate from vegetables, fruits, cooked foods, and ready-to-eat foods, and washing hands, knives, countertops, and cutting boards after preparing uncooked foods.

In a recent press release, the FDA states that no reports have been indicated these products have caused any illness, but consumers are still being urged to dispose of them or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.
