Toyota, Honda and Nissan have collectively recalled more than three million vehicles due to malfunctioning airbags, which deploy abnormally in a collision, manufactured by Japanese safety gear giant Takata Corp.
This is the biggest recall for Takata since 1995, when more than nine million automobiles were recalled due to faulty seatbelts. The air bag inflators in the current recall were made between 2000 and 2002. Toyota reports that improperly manufactured propellant wafers in the front passenger airbag inflators could cause the inflator to rupture and the airbag to deploy incorrectly. Affected vehicles include Toyota’s popular Corolla and Camry models, made between November 2000 and March 2004. Five incidents of malfunctions have been reported so far, but no injuries.
The recall is Toyota’s second involving more than one million vehicles this year.
