The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports in the Los Angeles Times that Graco Children’s Products Inc., a subsidiary of Newell Rubbermaid Inc., has issued a recall of 3.7 million child car seats due to defective harness buckles which may make it difficult to remove a child from the seats in the event of a collision or other emergency.

The recall, which is the largest car seat recall in five years and the fifth largest car seat recall ever, covers 11 different models of seats made between 2009 and 2013. Models affected by the recall include Cozy Cline, ComfortSport, Classic Ride 50, My Ride 65, My Ride with Safety Surround, My Ride 70, Size 4 Me 70, Smart Seat, Nautilus, Nautilus Elite and Argos 70.

The NHTSA is recommending that Graco recall an additional 1.83 million seats that feature the same buckles, but the manufacturer has not yet done so. Graco has also declined to state how or when the problem will be remedied. Owners of car seats included in the recall are urged to contact Graco directly.
