Tylenol: It’s a household name. When people are experiencing pain-causing symptoms, they look to—and trust in—the medication to lessen their discomfort.
That trust may have been betrayed, however, for those who took pills from the more than 60,000 bottles of Tylenol a Johnson & Johnson subsidiary recalled in late June. The bottles were pulled from shelves due to a reported “musty, moldy” odor—a smell that has been linked to a chemical, tribromoanisole, that can cause temporary gastrointestinal symptoms. Consumers are being advised not to take the recalled pills.
This is the latest in a slew of recalls Johnson & Johnson has had to issue in the past year, raising the specter of company-wide safety issues at one of the country’s biggest healthcare-product makers. In March, U.S. health officials announced they would monitor Johnson & Johnson manufacturing plants where quality-control oversights have resulted in recalls.
