A new study conducted by researchers at the Houston Veterans Affairs Center for Innovations in Quality, Effectiveness and Safety and published in the journal BMJ Quality & Safety finds that medical misdiagnosis may be far more common than previously thought, affecting at least 1 in 20 adults in the United States each year.

An examination of the study on the Huffington Post reported that 1 in 20 adults equates to 12 million people annually who are misdiagnosed by medical professionals, with an estimated half of those misdiagnoses leading to serious harm. Researchers believe that the most dangerous and costly type of diagnostic error is delayed cancer diagnosis.

Since many misdiagnoses likely went undocumented in the patients’ medical records, it is probable that actual misdiagnosis rates are even higher.
