McNeil Consumer Healthcare has once again expanded its recall of Extra Strength Tylenol tablets and Benadryl Allergy Ultratab tablets. The original recall began in November 2009 and was expanded in January to include about 500 over-the-counter products. The latest recall includes four additional lots of Benadryl (AJA008, ADA194, ABA022, ABA264) and one additional lot of Extra Strength Tylenol Rapid Release Gels (ASA202).
The original recall followed consumer complaints of a musty or moldy odor, which was linked to trace amounts of a chemical used in the production and transport of packaging materials. Although McNeil claims that the risk of adverse events is “remote,” drug manufacturers cannot be counted on to have the consumer’s best interest in mind. Pharmaceutical companies continue to market unsafe medications, with the FDA’s approval, causing harm rather than promoting health.
