Three strikes, you’re out—right? Not in Honda’s case, apparently. The automaker last month issued its fourth recall related to air bags that go off so strongly they injure—or even kill—the driver.

The recall affects 833,000 vehicles (some 2001-2 Accords and Civics, the 2002 Odyssey, the 2002-3 CR-V, some 2002-3 Acura 3.2 TLs and the Acura 3.2 CL). Honda says only 2,400 of the recalled vehicles are hazardous, though, because faulty, previously recalled air bags were mistakenly installed in those cars during repairs.

This latest action brings to nearly 1.7 million the total number of vehicles Honda has recalled for this issue since it arose in 2008. In 2009, after the carmaker expanded its first, very limited recall to include about 440,000 more vehicles, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigated it for possibly low-balling the initial recall (The agency never took action). According to Honda, the defective air bags have resulted in “a small number of injuries” and two deaths.
