A diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease can be life-changing—after all, the disease is debilitating, incurable and of unknown origin.
Doctors, though, don’t always diagnose Parkinson’s correctly. The citizens’ advocacy group Public Citizen reported earlier this month that one in every 10 people diagnosed with the disease in fact has a condition called drug-induced Parkinsonism.
The symptoms of Parkinsonism—tremors, slow movement, impaired speech, etc—are similar to those of Parkinson’s. The causes of Parkinson’s are not known and the disease is irreversible however, the causes of Parkinsonism are known—49 prescription drugs have been linked to it—and the condition can be reversed by a change in medication.
