A class action lawsuit has been filed against Nestle Purina PetCare for allegations that their dry dog field, Beneful, has caused severe illness, and death for thousands of dogs across the country. Over the past four years, more than 3,000 cases have been reported of dogs becoming seriously ill or dying after eating Beneful due to internal bleeding, liver failure, vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss, seizures, bloating, and kidney failure.

The lawsuit was filed at the beginning of February in Northern California, and claims that Purina Nestle knew that Beneful was potentially harmful, but decided to sell it anyway without adequate testing or investigation. It was filed because a local man found one of his three dogs dead, and the other two in critical condition after consuming Beneful. The dog food is said to contain toxic ingredients such as propylene glycol, also known as a component of auto antifreeze, and mycotoxins, toxic agents produced by a fungus in the grains. Although a known toxin, propylene glycol is an additive approved by the FDA for humans and dogs, and can be found most commonly in cake mixes, salad dressings, soft drinks, and popcorn. Eight brands under the Beneful label are said to be affected, Purina Beneful Healthy Weight, Original, Incredibites, Healthy Growth for Puppies, Healthy Smile, Healthy Fiesta, Healthy Radiance, and Playful Life.

Director of Corporate Communications for Nestle Purina PetCare, Bill Salzman, denies the claims filed in the lawsuit, saying, “We believe the lawsuit is baseless, and we intend to vigorously defend ourselves and our brand.” He also blamed social media for the widespread concern stating, “Like other pet foods, Beneful is occasionally the subject of social-media driven misinformation. Online postings often contain false, unsupported, and misleading allegations that cause undue concern and confusion for our Beneful customers.”

Many victims have been reporting the health deterioration in their pets to be alarmingly quick, often in a matter of weeks. The FDA is encouraging anyone who suspects their pet food to be harmful to file a safety report.
