Unibright Foods Inc., a California meat production company has recalled all frozen, ready to eat sukiyaki beef and gingered pork products for the possibility of containing metal fragments. This includes 48,000 pounds of 2.2 pound packages of Mishima sukiyaki beef with establishment number “EST.1163” inside the USDA mark of inspection, and package ID number 15069, and 1.7 pound packages of Mishima gingered pork, with establishment number “EST.1163,” and package ID number 15059. The affected beef was produced between August 12 and December 16, and the affected pork was produced between August 5 and 6. This affects all beef and pork products manufactured by this company in retail stores and restaurants in California, Arizona, Colorado, Hawaii, Illinois, New Jersey, and New York.
Unibright Foods was notified of the problem after a restaurant in Illinois complained to their distributor that a customer found a stainless steel wire in a sukiyaki beef product. No injuries or deaths have been reported to the Food Safety and Inspection Service so far, but that does not mean the beef and pork products shipped between those specific dates aren’t harmful, and they are urging anyone concerned about illness or injury from consumption of these products to contact a healthcare provider. The Food and Drug Administration says that metal fragments can potentially end up in food during processing when handled with metal instruments such as blenders, can openers, moving wire mesh belts, injection needles, screens, metal ties, and portion control equipment. They are usually either removed by passing the product through a screen, magnet, or flotation tank, or by an electronic metal detector, however, some types of metal, such as stainless steel, can be difficult to detect, and may become embedded due to the nature of the product.
The Food and Safety Inspection Service routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify that recalling firms notify their customers of the recall and that steps are taken to make certain that the product is no longer available to customers.
