The father of an unarmed 19-year-old who was shot to death by two Pasadena police officers in a case of mistaken identity reached a settlement with the city in his wrongful death suit, reports the Pasadena Star-News.

The teenager was walking at night on a poorly lit street when he was mistaken for a robbery suspect by two Pasadena Police officers, who shot him 8 times, including several shots from less than 2 feet away. The officers were responding to a 911 call that was later discovered to include an intentionally falsified description of the suspect. The caller who phoned in the robbery complaint was later convicted of making a false report.

Both the victim’s father and mother filed separate wrongful death claims against the city, and both reached settlements shortly before their trials were set to begin. The terms of both settlements were undisclosed.

The shooting was deemed lawful by both an internal review and the District Attorney’s Office, while the final report from the Office of Independent Review (OIR) is still pending, set to be released in July. The local chapter of the NAACP has submitted repeated requests for the independent report, alleging that the delay could be due to the lawsuit – a claim publicly denied by an OIR attorney.
