More than 220,000 infant travel beds were recalled by the manufacturer after one 5-month old baby died and nine others were trapped inside of the “portable sleep tents”.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, children could suffocate after becoming trapped between the bed’s air mattress and the side of the tent. To address safety concerns, KidCo, the company behind the Pea Pod Travel Bed, is offering consumers who have purchased the beds special modification kits to strengthen the sides of the tent, as well as a thinner air mattress. Together, these modifications should prevent the formation of space between the mattress and the tent in which a baby’s head could become lodged.

Some consumer safety groups are demanding that KidCo offer refunds rather than the modification kits, so that parents can opt to purchase products tested for safety standards instead.
