A Michigan doctor has been accused of billing Medicare for false claims and intentionally misdiagnosing patients with cancer in order to administer expensive chemotherapy treatments to them, according to Today News.

Dr. Farid Fata, an oncologist with more than a thousand patients, has been named as the alleged primary perpetrator of what could be a $35 million health care fraud. In addition to the deliberate misdiagnoses of healthy patients, Dr. Fata is also accused of giving unnecessary chemotherapy treatments to patients who were beyond medical help. Fata is currently in jail on a $9 million bond.

To avoid a medical misdiagnosis, experts recommend requesting copies of your medical records, and always seeking a second opinion if you receive a serious or potentially life-threatening diagnosis.
