The Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that toy manufacturer Dunecraft Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio, has voluntarily recalled a variety of marble-sized toys that expand when exposed to water because children may swallow them, leading to intestinal blockage.

The toys, which were sold under the names Water Balz, Growing Skulls, H2Orbs “Despicable Me” and Fabulous Flowers, grow to 400 times their original size when placed in water. Due to their expansive nature, they can become lodged in the intestinal tract if swallowed by children. One 8-month old girl ingested one of the balls in August 2011 and required surgery to remove the toy.

Symptoms may include vomiting and dehydration. The toys are not visible on X-rays. Consumers are advised to take all water balls away from children and contact Dunecraft for a free replacement toy.
