Imagine driving down the freeway at 60 miles per hour, surrounded by other speeding vehicles, when suddenly, your car stalls.

It’s a frightening scenario—and it’s one some Toyota owners actually found themselves in before the carmaker recalled more than 82,000 of its hybrid SUVs last month. The recall came after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration had opened an investigation into dozens of reported stalling incidents with 2006 Highlander hybrid vehicles. Two-thirds of the incidents, the agency says, occurred at speeds of 40 miles per hour or faster. Toyota says the transistors in some control boards are faulty and can be damaged by heat during “high-load driving.”
