The World Health Organization has released a report on spinal cord injuries, finding that as many as half a million people worldwide are afflicted with injuries to their spine every year. Those who suffer from spinal cord injuries are more likely to die prematurely, particularly if they lack the financial resources for proper care.

According to the WHO’s “International perspectives on spinal cord injury,” 90% of spinal cord injuries can be attributed to trauma, such as car accidents or falls. Consequences of injury to the spine include chronic pain, depression, and socioeconomic challenges in school or the workforce.

To properly manage spinal cord injuries, patients require regular access to medical care and assistive devices,  as well as mental health care and rehabilitation. WHO also urges nations to take steps toward ending discrimination against disabled persons, allowing them to engage more fully with society, particularly in employment and educational settings.
