A homeless woman who was brought into the emergency room at L.A. County-USC Medical Center suffering from severe abdominal pains has reached a $7.5 million settlement with the county, alleging that medical negligence ruptured her uterus and permanently disabled her newborn son.
The woman, who was 39 weeks pregnant and living at a homeless shelter at the time of her admittance to the hospital, was discharged after 14 hours without receiving the services of an obstetrician according to the Los Angeles Times. Less than 12 hours after her discharge, she was readmitted with a ruptured uterus that limited the amount of oxygen that could reach the child during his delivery. The baby sustained severe brain damage and lives at a long-term care facility.
According to spokesman for the county, the multimillion dollar settlement is the largest approved by the county in the past eight years. The mother, who is currently living in a rent-subsidized apartment, says that the settlement money will go toward her baby’s medical bills and the purchase of a house that will allow the child to live with his family.
