A Porter Ranch family has filed a lawsuit against Southern California Gas Co. and Sempra Energy after the companies failed to take responsibility for their medical and relocation needs when hundreds of Porter Ranch residents were forced out of their homes and sickened due to a natural gas leak.
Christine and Brian Katz claim that their entire family is experiencing severe health issues as a direct result of the leak, and is seeking financial compensation for their losses.
Over two months ago, when the gas leak allegedly began, their 2 year old daughter had to be hospitalized for breathing problems, and had no previous medical record of breathing problems or asthma.
The leak was first discovered by Aliso Canyon Storage Field crews on October 23rd, about a mile from the Katz residence, two adults and five children. Initially, officials claimed it would be fixed in a matter of days, but later retracted that statement, revealing that it would actually take months.
Since then, county health officials have been getting reports of nosebleeds, dizziness, nausea, and headaches from residents. They ordered Southern California Gas Co. to relocate the affected residents, and provide free housing, but because of differing circumstances, some homeowners have said that moving is not an option.
The company has continued to deny any responsibility for health problems, saying that leaking levels are too low, and that natural gas is not toxic enough for long term health issues. “While we cannot comment on pending litigation, we are continuing to do everything we can to support the families who have been affected and address their concerns including relocating families should they wish,” the company said in a written statement.
There has been no evacuation order issued for the area, but 700 families have left, and 1,000 have applied for relocation services. The company is apparently offering reimbursements for customers who make their own accommodation arrangements in addition to relocation services.
