Warfarin is an anticoagulant that reduces the risk of blood clots. According to PubMed Health, because the drug works by thinning the blood, it “may cause severe bleeding that can be life-threatening and even cause death.” The severity of warfarin’s risks makes a recent recall of the drug especially disquieting.

The pharmaceutical giant Bristol-Myers Squibb earlier this month recalled 1.8 million tablets of Coumadin, its brand-name version of warfarin. The drugmaker avoided giving specifics, but suggested in the press release announcing the recall that at least some of the affected pills may have been overly potent. The company advised Coumadin patients to continue using their medication and contact their pharmacist to determine whether their tablets were among the recalled batch.
