The U.S Product Safety Commission has recalled more than 4,000 golf carts because the fuel tanks may crack, leading to a hazardous fuel leak and a potential fire. The golf carts, manufactured by Club Car LLC and sold between April and June 2012, run on gasoline or diesel.

Although they have not yet been the cause of any reported injuries or deaths, the manufacturer issued the voluntary recall when it discovered that at least 10 different fuel tanks had filler necks that cracked.

Manufacturers of defective products can be held liable for damages suffered by consumers who purchase their products and sustain injuries as a result of the defect. Many voluntary recalls are an attempt by the manufacturer to prevent costly product liability lawsuits from occurring by removing the potentially hazardous products from the market.
