A Washington based frozen foods manufacturer has issued a massive nationwide recall of nearly 360 fruit and vegetable products sold in popular grocery stores, including Trader Joe’s and Safeway, because of potential listeria contamination. The recall applies to every product the company, CRF Frozen Foods, has ever made going back to May 2014 with “sell by” dates ranging from April 2016 to April 2018. Eight people across three states have been hospitalized due to listeria so far, with some of those cases being connected to the recall. “Epidemiologic and laboratory evidence available at this time indicates that frozen vegetables produced by CRF Frozen Foods of Pasco, Washington and sold under various brand names are one likely source of illness in this outbreak,” reported the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In a statement released by the company, they stated that the contaminated foods were likely sold in stores in all 50 states, and even some Canadian provinces. A full list of recalled products includes frozen organic sweet yellow corn, organic chopped kale, organic broccoli florets, organic wild strawberries, and organic sweet potatoes. Symptoms of listeria mimic that of your common “stomach-bug,” including fever, fatigue, headache, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Those with compromised immune systems are especially at risk- babies, pregnant women, the elderly, and the ill. Even though listeriosis is one of the less common foodborne pathogens, it is more lethal, causing about 1,600 illnesses and 260 deaths in the U.S. So far, 2 deaths have been reported. Listeria can thrive and grow even in sub-zero temperatures, which raises serious concerns with frozen food, because it is possible for a person to become infected years after purchasing a product. Listeria can be killed by heating it at high temperatures (more than 165 F), but it is highly recommended that consumers not take the risk, but instead throw away any products suspected of containing listeria.
