When you take a medication, you accept – within reason – the risk of negative effects. What you don’t accept is the risk of those effects on people and animals around you; a drug you’ve chosen to take shouldn’t adversely impact your children or your pets.

And yet, that’s what the drug Evamist may have done. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration notified healthcare professionals and patients earlier this year that the drug, an estrogen hormone that’s sprayed on the inside forearm to reduce hot flashes during menopause, may have negative effects on children and pets who come into contact with it. The agency is investigating disturbing reports that Evamist induced premature puberty in children who were exposed to the drug, causing nipple swelling and breast development in girls and breast enlargement in boys.
