According to a report in the SFGate, at least 14 elderly nursing home patients were abandoned by staff after the state ordered the facility to close.

After the Department of Social Services posted a notice ordering Valley Manor Residential Care in Castro Valley, California to close by October 24, the majority of the staff simply walked off the job, leaving behind more than a dozen patients. Among those abandoned were individuals suffering from mobility issues and mental illness. Of the staff, a cook, a janitor and a single caretaker remained.

After officials discovered the situation, the remaining patients were transported by ambulance to other assisted living facilities. None of the patients appear to have suffered additional injuries from their abandonment. A criminal investigation of the matter is underway.
