The Sacramento Bee reports that a 48-year old husband and father has been forced to undergo the amputation of his hands, feet and lower legs after a local hospital failed to properly diagnose and treat his methicillin-sensitive staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) infection.
MSSA is an infection that is typically treatable with antibiotics; yet even after repeated visits to the hospital with complaints of sores and shoulder pain, the patient was not given antibiotics and was not diagnosed with MSSA, despite the fact that his 11-year old son was treated for the infection at the same hospital only weeks prior.
Two days after his third visit to the hospital, the patient collapsed at home and subsequently had his hands and feet amputated, followed shortly by his lower legs. A medical malpractice lawsuit against the hospital is pending.
