According to a study conducted by Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Ohio and published in the journal Pediatrics, children’s “bounce houses” – sometimes viewed by parents as a safer alternative to trampolines – have been the cause of an estimated 64,000 injuries between 1990 and 2010.

Between this period, the yearly injury rate for bounce houses increased 15-fold, to more than 5 injuries per 100,000 kids. While trampolines continue to have higher injury rates, bounce houses are not without their dangers, although they seem to have escaped much of the negative publicity afforded trampolines in both medical literature and public policy.

Most injuries sustained by children in bounce houses are sprains, strains and broken bones. The study calls for improved design and tighter safety guidelines to decrease the risk of injury in the future.
