Here’s a sobering reminder of the importance of pool safety: Just since Memorial Day, at least 90 children younger than 15 have drowned in swimming pools, and 106 more needed emergency care after near-drowning incidents.

That’s according to new data the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recently released to encourage parents to teach their children to swim and to bring more attention to pool safety. The agency is urging parents to:

• Remain near and closely supervise kids in and around swimming pools.
• Teach children how to swim and about pool safety, and learn CPR.
• Have adequate safety equipment for pools, including fencing, a pool cover, drain covers and lifesaving equipment.

Pool drownings “are preventable tragedies,” CPSC Chairman Inez Tenenbaum said in a press release. “We must continue to share the simple safety steps that parents and caregivers should take both before and during time spent in or near the water”. For more information on pool safety, go to the CPSC’s Pool Safely campaign website.
