You think patients who have been harmed by defective medical products can’t win in court against the products’ makers? Think again.

Medtronic, the world’s biggest heart-device manufacturer, agreed last month to settle $268 million in claims that the wires connecting its Sprint Fidelis implantable cardiac defibrillators are defective, according to Bloomberg News. The company will pay each of 8,100 patients with the faulty wires inside them $33,000 on average.

The patients’ attorneys had argued that the wires’ flaws resulted from problems at Medtronic’s factory in Puerto Rico. The company itself had admitted that the wires “may have been a possible or likely contributing factor” in the deaths of 13 patients.

Medtronic estimates that the defective wires are still inside 170,000 people worldwide.
